The Vessel

A virtual bridge,
built in carbon

The OBLUE FERRY 12E is the world's first commercial, emission-free, autonomous passenger ferry — a 12-metre carbon fiber catamaran linking Södermalm and Kungsholmen across Stockholm's Riddarfjärden.

Christened on 8 June 2023, the first FERRY 12E is operated by a Nordic mobility operator — with a safety operator on board in the first phase and a clear roadmap to shore-supervised, unmanned operation.

  • Carbon fiber / vinylester sandwich catamaran
  • Integrated autonomous navigation suite
  • Four electric pods, 188 kWh battery — 15 hours daily
  • Double-ended layout, boarding on both sides

Design Highlights

Autonomy, proven in service

01

Autonomous Navigation Suite

From decision support to remotely supervised autonomy — the integrated suite is the roadmap that takes the FERRY 12E toward unmanned, shore-supervised operation.

02

All-Electric Pod Propulsion

Four electric pods and a 188 kWh battery pack give fifteen hours of daily operation — silent, zero-emission and inexpensive to run.

03

Solar Roof

The full-width rooftop array feeds the vessel's electrical loads — free energy harvested over every crossing.

04

Carbon Fiber, Double-Ended

A light, stiff carbon sandwich catamaran with identical ends — no turning basin needed on a tight city route.

On Board

An open deck,
a panoramic view

Twenty-five passengers ride a bright, open deck wrapped in floor-to-ceiling glazing — hop on, hop off between Södermalm and Kungsholmen.

General Arrangement

One open deck,
both ends forward

Double-ended deck plan: boarding gates port and starboard at both ends, helm amidships, machinery below — no bow, no stern, no turning.

In Service

Running the
Riddarfjärden shuttle

Since 12 June 2023 the first FERRY 12E has shuttled between Södermalm and Kungsholmen — up to 120 crossings a day, fifteen hours daily, every fifteen minutes at full rhythm.
